The second matchday of 2024-25 is over, and our excellent team at OptaJoe have got all sorts of facts from the weekend. Here, we look over the best Premier League stats from Matchday 2.

Opta Stats Hub Premier League

Since 2022-23, Manchester United have lost more Premier League games thanks to goals scored in the 90th minute than any other side (6); they’d only lost two such games in their first 30 seasons in the competition.

It happened again. Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Brighton and Hove Albion saw Manchester United lose yet another Premier League match under Erik ten Hag via a goal in the 90th minute or later.

United have now suffered six defeats in this manner since the Dutchman first took charge in 2022-23, which is two more than any other team in the Premier League in that time.

The Red Devils have only lost eight games via 90th-minute winning goals in Premier League history, meaning they’ve been defeated in this way three times as often in their 78 games under Ten Hag (six times) as they had been in their previous 1,152 matches (twice).

Last Minute Winners vs Man Utd

All seven of Man City striker Erling Haaland’s Premier League hat-tricks have been scored at the Etihad Stadium – only Thierry Henry has scored more in the competition with 100% of them coming at a single venue (8 at Highbury).

Erling Haaland scored yet another hat-trick this weekend in Manchester City’s win over Ipswich Town. Again, it came at the Etihad Stadium – the scene of all of his six prior Premier League hat-tricks.

Only two players have scored more hat-tricks in the competition at a single stadium – Sergio Agüero’s nine at the Etihad and Thierry Henry’s eight at Highbury, but only Henry scored more of his exclusively at one stadium.

Since 2019-20, which was his first season at Borussia Dortmund, no player has scored as many hat-tricks in the top five European leagues as Haaland (10), which is one ahead of Robert Lewandowski (9) and five more than Kylian Mbappé (5).

Southampton’s Ben Brereton Díaz has failed to end on the winning side in any of his 16 Premier League appearances (D4 L12). In the competition’s history, only Marvin Sordell (P17 D4 L13 between 2012-2015) has made more appearances without ever enjoying victory.

The Premier League hasn’t brought much joy for Ben Brereton Díaz. After making his Premier League debut last season for Sheffield United, he didn’t end on the winning side in any of his 14 appearances for the club, losing 10 and drawing four of those games in 2023-24. It hasn’t been much better at Southampton, so far at least.

Their two defeats to start 2024-25 mean that Brereton Díaz has stretched his winless run to 16 matches in the Premier League and is now just one off the all-time worst record set by Marvin Sordell between 2012 and 2015 for Burnley and Bolton Wanderers.

The Chile international still has some way to go to equal the Premier League record for the longest wait for a Premier League win, however. That is currently held by Oliver Burke, who didn’t end on the winning side in any of his first 25 Premier League appearances before he finally enjoyed victory when Sheffield United defeated Newcastle 1-0 in January 2021 – nearly four years after his debut. Burke broke a record previously held by Gareth Bale, who didn’t win any of his first 24 Premier League games.

Yves Bissouma became the 172nd different player to score a Premier League goal for Tottenham, more unique goalscorers than any other side in the competition’s history.

Yves Bissouma scored his first Premier League goal for Spurs in their 4-0 win over Everton on Saturday, and it was worth the wait.

A powerful strike from outside the box ended a sequence of 21 passes involving eight different Tottenham players – the most passes leading to a Premier League goal so far in 2024-25.

He became the 172nd different player (excluding own goals) to score a Premier League goal for Spurs, moving ahead of West Ham (171) in the rankings. Of course, with so many new signings coming to east London this summer, we expect that tally to rise for the Hammers this season.

Different Goalscorers for Premier League Clubs

Six of Leandro Trossard’s 14 Premier League goals for Arsenal have been as a substitute, the highest share of any player to score 10+ goals for the club in the competition (43%).

Leandro Trossard scored his 14th Premier League goal for Arsenal in the Premier League in Saturday’s win over Aston Villa. He’s become something of a super-sub for Mikel Arteta, with six of those goals coming as a substitute.

He’s still a way off replicating the feats of Olivier Giroud for the Gunners, however. The French striker scored 17 goals off the bench for Arsenal in the Premier League, which is the joint-most of any player for a single club in the competition, alongside Ole Gunnar Solskjær at Manchester United – four of which came in a single game, as the Norwegian became one of just six players to score a Premier League hat-trick as a substitute.

Of current players, Marcus Rashford could go on to break the Premier League substitute goal record at a single club. The forward is currently on 13 goals as a sub for Man Utd in the competition, just four off Giroud and Solskjær.

Most Sub Goals for a Premier League Club

Mohamed Salah has been directly involved in 128 goals in 128 league appearances at Anfield for Liverpool (93 goals, 35 assists).

There is little doubt that Mohamed Salah will eventually leave Liverpool as one of their greatest players ever. That exit could come next summer, with the Egyptian’s contract expiring at the end of this season.

He scored Liverpool’s second goal in their 2-0 win over Brentford on Sunday to add to his Premier League goal involvements at Anfield. Incredibly, that record stands at an average of a goal involvement every game across his 128 appearances for Liverpool at the stadium. He did play there once for Chelsea in April 2014, so overall his record is 128 goal involvements in 129 games.

Across Premier League history, just five players have been involved in more goals at a single stadium: Wayne Rooney at Old Trafford (151), Thierry Henry at Highbury (151), Ryan Giggs at Old Trafford (134), Sergio Agüero at the Etihad Stadium (132) and Frank Lampard at Stamford Bridge (131).
