Liverpool recovered from a very early scare at San Siro to get their 2024-25 Champions League campaign off to a winning start against Milan.

In Arne Slot’s first Champions League game since taking charge, Christian Pulisic put the hosts ahead inside three minutes, only for both Liverpool centre-backs, Ibrahima Konaté and Virgil van Dijk, to score headers from set-pieces to turn the game on its head before the half-time whistle.

Midway through the second half, Dominik Szoboszlai then added a third to put the result beyond doubt, and extend Liverpool’s record-breaking 100% record at San Siro.

  • Three of the last four UEFA Champions League games that Milan have lost after having been ahead have come against Liverpool – indeed, the Reds are the first side to win three games from behind against the Rossoneri.
  • Having been unbeaten in their first 13 home games against English sides between 1958 and 2007 (W8 D5), Milan have now lost eight of their last 11 such matches in all competitions (W2 D1).
  • Trent Alexander-Arnold’s assist for Liverpool’s equaliser was his 80th for the Reds – since his debut in October 2016, only Kevin De Bruyne (146) and Mohamed Salah (90) have provided more in all competitions among Premier League players.
  • In Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté, Liverpool had two defenders score in the same UEFA Champions League game for the first time. Meanwhile, Van Dijk became the third Dutch player to score on his 50th appearance in the competition, after Ruud van Nistelrooy and Roy Makaay (both in 2005).
  • Christian Pulisic’s goal after two minutes and 47 seconds was the earliest they had scored in the UEFA Champions League since Alexandre Pato against Barcelona in September 2011 (24 seconds). Indeed, two of their five goals scored in the opening three minutes in the competition have come against Liverpool (also Paolo Maldini after 51 seconds in the 2005 final).
  • Liverpool’s Arne Slot became just the fifth manager to win a UEFA Champions League game on his birthday, after Bobby Robson (Newcastle v Bayer Leverkusen in 2003), Roberto Mancini (Inter v Fenerbahçe in 2007), Henk ten Cate (Panathinaikos v Anorthosis Famagusta in 2008) and Arsène Wenger (Arsenal v Anderlecht in 2014).
  • Milan had two English players in their starting lineup (Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Fikayo Tomori) to Liverpool’s one (Trent Alexander-Arnold). It’s just the fifth time in a UEFA Champions League match a non-English side has had more English starters than their English opponents, after Rangers vs Liverpool (both meetings in 2022-23) and Real Madrid vs Arsenal (both meetings in 2005-06).
