Liverpool secured yet another UEFA Champions League win at San Siro on Tuesday, with the Reds continuing their 100% record at the stadium in their fourth UCL visit.
Liverpool earned a 3-1 win over Milan at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza – more commonly known as San Siro – on Tuesday night in the UEFA Champions League. It’s been a happy hunting ground for the Reds in the competition, with their latest victory making it four wins from four matches played there against AC Milan and Inter Milan.
In fact, Liverpool are the only team to play at San Siro more than once in the Champions League and maintain a 100% win ratio.
Following Tuesday’s victory, they are now one of just five teams to have beaten Milan more than once away from home in the UCL after Ajax, Atlético Madrid, Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund (all twice). They were already one of just three teams to win more than once in San Siro versus Internazionale alongside Real Madrid (twice) and Bayern Munich (three times).
Here, we look back at all four of Liverpool’s Champions League wins in the iconic stadium.
Inter 0-1 Liverpool
11 March 2008 – Last 16, Second Leg
Liverpool headed to San Siro for the second leg of their last-16 tie with Inter sitting on a 2-0 lead after winning the first leg at Anfield. Inter’s display on Merseyside was well below par, with just four shots and none of those finding the target.
Goals from Steven Gerrard and Dirk Kuyt in the final five minutes of the game in Liverpool meant Inter had it all to do in front of their own fans, but Fernando Torres ended their hopes with a second-half strike.
Torres’ goal in the 64th minute killed the tie, but only after Inter had seen Nicolas Burdisso sent off early in the second half.
Despite needing goals to overturn the first-leg deficit, Inter could only muster two shots on target in the second leg and were eliminated 3-0 on aggregate. Liverpool eventually progressed to the semi-finals before being knocked out by fellow Premier League club Chelsea.
Milan 1-2 Liverpool
7 December 2021 – Group Stage
Liverpool became the first English side to win all six of their Champions League group games with victory over Milan in San Siro back in December 2021.
They were made to work to keep up their 100% record in Group B, though, coming from behind to win the match thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi to cancel out Fikayo Tomori’s opener for the Italians.
Salah’s goal was his 20th of the season in all competitions for Liverpool, in his 21st appearance of 2021-22. With that strike, he became the first player to score 20+ goals in five consecutive campaigns for the Reds since Ian Rush (six between 1981-82 and 1986-87).
For Milan, this defeat meant they finished bottom of their group for just the second time in UEFA Champions League history, previously doing so in the 1999-00 campaign. Liverpool went on to reach the final, but not before they had another trip to San Siro to face Milan’s rivals…
Inter 0-2 Liverpool
16 February 2022 – Last 16, First Leg
Liverpool’s second trip to Milan in 2021-22 ended even better than the first, with Jürgen Klopp’s side sealing a vital 2-0 first-leg win against Inter in the round of 16.
With the game seemingly heading for a goalless draw, strikes in the last 15 minutes from substitute Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah gave Liverpool a healthy lead going into the second leg at Anfield. Those were the only two shots on target in the entire match.
Liverpool eventually won the tie 2-1 but suffered a scare in the home leg after losing 1-0 thanks to a Lautaro Martínez strike, ending Liverpool’s seven-game winning streak in the competition that season.
Salah’s goal in Italy meant he became the second player to score against both Milan and Inter in the same Champions League season after Peter Crouch for Tottenham in 2010-11. It was also the eighth consecutive UCL away appearance in which he scored.
Milan 1-3 Liverpool
17 September 2024 – League Phase
Liverpool’s first game in the new-look 2024-25 Champions League brought another win at San Siro, but again, it didn’t come without a scare.
After only two minutes and 47 seconds, Christian Pulisic put the hosts ahead. It was only Milan’s fifth ever Champions League goal inside three minutes; one of the others was Paolo Maldini’s opener in the 2005 final against Liverpool.
But like on that famous night in Istanbul – although in rather less dramatic fashion this time – Liverpool scored three goals to storm back into a game against Milan. On this occasion in Italy, however, they were only battling back from one goal down.
Goals from centre-backs Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté turned the game on its head inside the first half, before Dominik Szoboszlai added a third midway through the second half as Liverpool extended their impressive run in Milan’s famous stadium.
