Match Preview

Tottenham continue to flirt with UEFA Champions League qualification as Ange Postecoglou’s side prepare to visit London Stadium for Tuesday’s Premier League clash against West Ham, whose own European hopes took a blow last time out.

Both sides were embroiled in late drama on Matchday 30 as David Moyes’ West Ham squandered a two-goal lead to lose 4-3 at Newcastle United, while Spurs came from behind to beat Luton 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday.

Tahith Chong’s third-minute opener for Rob Edwards’ Hatters stunned Tottenham, though they levelled through Issa Kaboré’s own goal before half-time substitute Brennan Johnson teed up Son Heung-min’s 86th-minute winner to complete Spurs’ Easter redemption.

Johnson has been involved in a league-leading six top-flight goals as a substitute this season (two goals, four assists). Meanwhile, Son has now scored at least 15 times in three of the last four Premier League seasons (23 in 2021-22 and 17 in 2020-21), while five of his 15 league goals this term have been the winning goal – no other player has more.

That comeback victory kept Spurs three points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa, who have played a game more, heading into the midweek action where Postecoglou may hope for less late drama. Tottenham have now earned 22 points from losing positions in the Premier League this season, only Liverpool (26) have more, while only in 2010-11 (24) and 2012-13 (23) have they accumulated more such points in a single campaign in the competition.

As for the visitors’ team news, Postecoglou will remain without long-term absentees Manor Solomon, Fraser Forster and Ryan Sessegnon, having recently welcomed back fit-again pair Richarlison and Micky van de Ven as substitutes for the Luton victory.

Though Tottenham had late drama to celebrate, West Ham were left bemoaning last-gasp heartbreak at St. James’ Park on MD 30. Goals from Michail Antonio, Mohammed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen had Moyes’ men flying after Alexander Isak’s opener, only for the Newcastle striker to pull another back before Harvey Barnes’ brilliance secured a come-from-behind triumph for Eddie Howe’s side.

Both Isak’s goals came from the penalty spot, albeit against different goalkeepers after the injured Alphonse Areola was replaced by Lukasz Fabianski at half-time. This was the first time that West Ham had lost a Premier League match in which they led by 2+ goals since September 2016 (a 4-2 home defeat to Watford).

Having watched on as Barnes inflicted the late pain with strikes in the 83rd and 90th minutes, Bowen could at least take some comfort from earlier adding his 15th Premier League goal of the season. Only Paolo Di Canio (16 in 1999-00) can boast more in a single campaign for West Ham.

Bowen’s individual success will have mattered for little as Moyes’ men remained seventh in the league table, four points behind Manchester United and just one clear of Newcastle, both of whom have played one game fewer.

The attacking burden may be shared on Tuesday, though, as Antonio is looking to score in three consecutive Premier League games for the first time since August 2021. The Jamaican has scored more goals against Tottenham in the competition than he has against any other opponent (six).

Further back, Areola is not expected to be fit after his groin injury at Newcastle, with the West Ham goalkeeper joining Nayef Aguerd and Edson Álvarez (suspended) as the absentees from Moyes’ lineup come Tuesday’s kick-off.

West Ham vs Tottenham Head-to-Head

West Ham are looking to achieve the Premier League double over Tottenham for the third time, having previously managed the feat in 1998-99 and 2013-14. Bowen and James Ward-Prowse were on target in a 2-1 victory in the reverse meeting this term.

Tottenham 1-2 West Ham

Indeed, Ward-Prowse has either scored or assisted a goal in each of his last six Premier League games against Tottenham, scoring four and assisting three in this run. His 10 goal involvements overall against Spurs (six goals, four assists) is his most against a single opponent in the competition.

This will be a tough task for the visitors, considering Tottenham are winless in their last three Premier League away games against West Ham (D1 L2), their longest run without a win at the Hammers since a run of six between 1995 and 2001.

Recent Form

West Ham’s defence will be a concern for Moyes, whose side has conceded at least once in each of their last 10 Premier League games, shipping 24 goals in total during this run.

The Hammers’ 54 goals conceded overall this season is just one fewer than they shipped in the whole of last term, while only in 2010-11 (1.84) have they had a higher goals conceded per game average than their 1.80 so far in 2023-24.

However, West Ham have enjoyed playing in the week. The hosts are unbeaten in four midweek Premier League games (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday), having won none of their six such matches last term.

Tottenham have also lost three of their last five Premier League London derby matches (W2), as many as they had in their previous 19 (W10 D6). In the competition’s history, Spurs have conceded 398 goals in such games, and could be the second side to ship 400 after the Hammers themselves.

West Ham vs Tottenham Prediction

The Opta supercomputer predicts Tottenham as the narrow favourites, with the visitors winning 39.9% of 10,000 pre-match simulations, compared to a West Ham victory in 32.7%.

A draw is not off the cards either, with that result forecast at 27.4% in the same data-led model, though that would not aid Tottenham’s top-four push in their pursuit of Aston Villa.

Spurs finish fourth, securing Champions League football, in 45.8% of Opta’s overall Premier League season predictions – just behind Villa (50.8%) – while West Ham drop two league-table positions down to ninth most often (20%).
