Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham continue to pick up the points, with Friday’s win over Crystal Palace extending their club record start for the Premier League era.
Tottenham are absolutely flying. Their unbeaten start to the season, which sees them currently top of the league, has broken a host of records, both as a club and for new manager Ange Postecoglou.
Postecoglou has now managed 10 games in the Premier League. With 26 points from those matches (W8 D2), the Australian has accrued the most points by a manager in their first 10 games in the competition’s history.
This is, unsurprisingly, Spurs’ best-ever start after 10 games in the Premier League era. What’s more, it is the second best in their top-flight history, after 1960-61. That season they took 30 points (when converted to three points for a win) from their first 10 games.
The most points Spurs had ever won through 10 games in a Premier League season before Friday was 23, a total they actually managed last season. However, they capitulated in the second half of the season to finish eighth. Their next best Premier League start came in 2011-12, where they had 22 points after 10 matches. They would finish that season in fourth.
Spurs’ best Premier League finish is second, a feat they achieved in the 2016-17 season. That season is one of three Premier League campaigns that Spurs have had exactly 20 points after 10 matches (along with 2013-14 and 2017-18).
Despite collecting 20+ points after 10 games in seven different Premier League seasons prior to this one, that solitary second place is their best performance. They’ve finished as low as sixth (2013-14), seventh (2020-21) and eighth (2022-23) despite those promising starts.
While we aren’t suggesting anything, their only better start than 2023-24 was the last time they won the top-flight title. There’s still a long way to go for them to even be considered by most as genuine challengers to Manchester City, but it’s certainly not a bad start.
Nothing’s guaranteed, but Spurs are enjoying the ride once again.
