We look ahead to this 2023 Women’s World Cup Group F fixture at the Sydney Football Stadium with our France vs Jamaica preview and prediction.

France vs Jamaica Stats: Quick Hits

  • France are overwhelming favourites for this match, with a 91.9% chance of defeating Jamaica to open their 2023 Women’s World Cup campaign with a win.
  • Hervé Renard will become just the second coach to manage at both Men’s and Women’s FIFA World Cups.
  • Jamaica star Khadija Shaw scored 20 goals in the English WSL for Manchester City in 2022-23, only England and Aston Villa striker Rachel Shaw scored more (22).

Match Preview

This will be the fifth Women’s World Cup that France have participated in, with the last three (2011, 2015 and 2019) seeing them progress to at least the quarter-finals of the tournament. Across those last three editions of the WWC, France have averaged the highest possession figure (57.4%) of the sides to have played at least 10 matches, so expect them to have plenty of the ball in this fixture, too.

Jamaica will be hoping to improve on their 2019 Women’s World Cup experience, where they lost all three matches. This game may not be the match to improve that record, but their following fixture in Group F presents an opportunity, versus Panama.

Much of their hopes will pin on the quality of striker Khadija Shaw, who was one of only two players to score at least 20 goals in the English Women’s Super League in 2022-23 (20 for Manchester City). She was also one of the three players involved in four goals during the 2022 Concacaf W Championship (three goals, one assist), the best tally in the competition.

This match will see Hervé Renard manage at the Women’s World Cup for the first time, having previously coached at the Men’s World Cup as coach of both Morocco and Saudi Arabia. He will become just the second coach to have managed at both editions, after John Herdman (with Canada and New Zealand for their women’s teams and Canada for the men’s team).

France vs Jamaica Head-to-Head

This will be the first meeting between France and Jamaica in women’s international football.

France have played a team from the Concacaf region on four previous occasions at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, losing twice against the United States and enjoying wins over both Canada and Mexico at previous tournaments.

France vs Jamaica Prediction

France vs Jamaica Prediction World Cup

Jamaica are overwhelming underdogs in this meeting with France – the Opta supercomputer is giving them just a 2.4% chance of picking up all three points, while the overall chance of stopping a French victory is just 8.1%.

Of course, simple maths will tell you that France’s chance of victory is 91.9% according to the Opta supercomputer – this is only lower than the win probability for the United States (95.3%), England (93.7%) and Brazil (93.8%) among the fixtures on the opening matchday of the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
