We look ahead to this 2023 Women’s World Cup Group F fixture at Suncorp Stadium with our France vs Brazil preview and prediction.

France vs Brazil Stats: Quick Hits

  • The Opta supercomputer has this as a very close contest, with Brazil made narrow favourites with a 36.4% chance of winning.
  • Brazil have never beaten France, who won their last meeting in 2022, winning 2-1 in the Tournoi de France.
  • Brazil’s Ary Borges was the only player to be involved in four goals in the first round of matches at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Match Preview

France eliminated Brazil from the quarter-finals of the 2019 Women’s World Cup, and will be hoping to beat them again four years later after their stuttering start to the tournament.

Their goalless draw with Jamaica in their opening game was their first 0-0 in the FIFA Women’s World Cup. However, France have always won at least one of their first two games at previous World Cups.

Brazil had the perfect start with their 4-0 dismantling of Panama, including a stunning performance from Ary Borges as she became the only player to be involved in four goals on Matchday 1 of this Women’s World Cup, scoring three and assisting another.

Ary Borges vs Panama

Brazil are unbeaten in their last eight group stage matches against European opposition at the WWC (W6 D2), winning each of the last four by an aggregate score of 6-0, and have won 12 of their last 13 games in the group stage overall (L1). They kept a clean sheet in each of those 12 wins, scoring three or more goals six times in that run.

Such was their dominance against Panama, Brazil had 13 different players attempt a shot on MD1, the most on record for a team in a Women’s World Cup game at the end of the opening matchday (since 2011).

They should have more trouble against France though, who have kept a clean sheet in four of their last five group stage games at the Women’s World Cup. They have also not conceded more than once in a group game at a WWC since losing 2-0 to Colombia in 2015.

France vs Brazil Head-to-Head

This will be the third time France and Brazil have met at the Women’s World Cup, with France winning 2-1 after extra-time in 2019 to reach the quarter finals, having drawn the first encounter 1-1 in 2003.

In fact, since that first meeting in 2003, they have faced each other 10 more times in various competitions and Brazil have still never beaten France, who have won six (including in extra-time in the 2019 WWC) and drawn five of their encounters.

France vs Brazil Prediction

France vs Brazil Prediction

Despite France’s excellent record against Brazil, the Opta supercomputer was clearly impressed by Pia Sundhage’s team and their performance against Panama. That coupled with France’s lacklustre showing against Jamaica has given Brazil the slight edge, with Opta suggesting they have a 36.4% chance of victory, marginally ahead of France’s 35.2% chance.

With that in mind, a draw would not seem like the craziest shout, and the stalemate is given a 28.4% chance of occurring, which would not be a terrible result for either team. It would leave France sweating ahead of their final clash with Panama, though.
