The list of quarterbacks who have thrown for the most passing yards in an FCS game, season or career is in synch with the rich history of Walter Payton Award recipients.

From Jamie Martin and Steve McNair in the early 1990s to NFL veterans Taylor Heinicke and Jimmy Garoppolo in the 2010s to prolific passers such as Devlin Hodges and Eric Barriere in recent years, the Payton, which is presented annually to the national offensive player of the year, features many of the best arms in FCS history. There are numerous other finalists on the all-time passing lists as well.

Moving both in and out of the pocket, we dive into the record books to highlight the quarterbacks who have thrown for the most passing yards:

The mesmerizing performance catapulted Heinicke toward the 2012 Walter Payton Award. He added 61 rushing yards to finish with 791 yards of total offense, which also is an FCS single-game record.
