Forest Green won the 2021-22 League Two title, meaning they’ll play as high as the third tier of English club football for the first time in their history in 2022-23. They did so under the promising young coach Rob Edwards, but the 39-year-old has since been pinched by Watford for the new season.

They were joined in the automatic promotion places by both Exeter City and Bristol Rovers, with Joey Barton’s side sealing a place in League One next season in style: outscoring rivals Northampton Town on the final day thanks to an emphatic 7-0 win over already relegated Scunthorpe United.

Port Vale also sealed promotion via the play-offs, while Scunthorpe were joined by Oldham Athletic in the relegation zone. Oldham became the first club to play in the Premier League and be relegated to non-league football.
