Hungary gave themselves a chance of making the last 16 of Euro 2024, beating Scotland with the latest regular-time goal on record in the European Championship in their Group A finale in Stuttgart.
In what was a poor match overall, Kevin Csoboth scored a 100th-minute winner to ensure Hungary finish third in Group A and send Scotland home with Steve Clarke’s side finishing bottom.
Both sides looked incredibly nervous in the first half. They seemed less excited about the possibility of scoring than the fear of conceding first. Scotland didn’t even attempt a shot in the opening 45 minutes – the second time that they’ve not done so in the first half of a game at Euro 2024 (also vs Germany), while no other team have even done this once.
Hungary weren’t much better before half-time, with four of their five shots from long range and only one hitting the target overall. They were even less threatening until added time in the second half, coming closest to scoring via Csoboth’s 92nd-minute shot that hit the post, before he eventually struck the winner.
Until injury time. the second half of this game was just as poor as the first, if not worse. The lack of attacking threat from either side was baffling, with Scotland and Hungary knowing that a win was the only real chance of them making the knockout stages.
Scotland had just one shot of any kind before second half added time arrived. In the end, they had four overall in the game. There are 20 teams at Euro 2024 still yet to play their third game of the tournament, yet it’s already confirmed that no side at the finals will return home with the fewer shots overall (17) and on target (3) than Scotland. Since the group stage was introduced in 1980, that is the joint fewest by a nation in a group stage, along with Northern Ireland at Euro 2016.
The game was overshadowed by an incident halfway through the second half, where Scotland goalkeeper appeared to accidently collide with Hungarian forward Barnabás Varga. There was a long pause in the match as Varga received treatment before being taken off the pitch with his teammates clearly distressed at the incident.
Hungary finish third in Group A and will now need other results to go their way to be one of the four best third-place finishers to progress to the last 16, though another goal or two likely would have increased their chances due to their minus-3 goal difference.
For Scotland, it’s yet another group-stage disaster. They have been involved in 12 major tournament finals, including Euro 2024, and have failed to exit the group stage in every single one of those. They haven’t even won a game in the last three tournament appearances – the 1998 World Cup, Euro 2020 and this tournament.

- Scotland had just 17 shots at Euro 2024 in total – since the group stage was introduced in 1980, that is the joint fewest by a nation in a group stage, along with Northern Ireland at Euro 2016.
- Hungary ended a run of eight European Championship finals matches without a win, registering their first victory since a 2-0 win over Austria at Euro 2016 – this was also their first clean sheet since that win.
- There have only been two instances at Euro 2024 of a team failing to have a shot in the first half of a match and both have been Scotland – on MD 1 vs Germany and tonight vs Hungary.
- Scotland completed 249 passes in the first half, the most they have completed in the first half of a major tournament match on record (1974 World Cup onwards).
- Grant Hanley completed 69 passes today, the most by a Scotland player in a major tournament game that Opta has on record (1974 World Cup onwards). Hanley also had more touches in the opposition box than any other Scottish player today (4).
- John McGinn won five fouls in this match, the most by a Scotland player in a major tournament game since Christian Dailly at the 1998 World Cup vs Norway (6).
