Arsenal did their bit in the title race. But it just wasn’t enough.
Beating this Manchester City machine is a challenge that has been beyond anyone else in the Premier League for four years now, and it was no different for Mikel Arteta’s hugely impressive side in 2023-24.
City beat West Ham at the Etihad Stadium to confirm a fourth consecutive Premier League title – a record in English top-flight history – meaning that Arsenal’s win over Everton, secured with Kai Hazertz’s late winner, was rendered meaningless.
It had looked like Arsenal might end the season with a disappointing whimper when Idrissa Gueye’s free-kick was deflected into the net by Declan Rice to give the visitors a shock lead. At that point, City were 2-0 up and there was little hope for Arsenal.
But then Takehiro Tomiyasu slammed in an equaliser and a minute later Mohammed Kudus had pulled one back for West Ham. Arsenal went into the break with hope to cling to.
But then Arsenal toiled for much of the second half, in which time City restored their two-goal lead. Arsenal weren’t top of the table for a single minute today.
They eventually found winner though, as Kai Havertz struck in the 89th minute to become the fifth Arsenal player to register 20+ Premier League goal involvements in his first season with the club, after Thierry Henry, Santi Cazorla, Lukas Podolski and Alexis Sánchez.
Once again, it was a case of close but no cigar for Arsenal, who have had to settle for second.
