Warren Gatland is back as head coach, but can Wales win their fifth Six Nations title under him?

The wait is over. The 2023 Six Nations begins this weekend, with the crème de la crème of Northern Hemisphere Rugby Union meeting across five matchdays in February and March.

Reigning champions France kick-off their quest for back-to-back Guinness Six Nations titles with an away trip to Stadio Olimpico in Rome, as they face outsiders Italy. France haven’t won consecutive Championships since 2007 and the current bookmaker odds place them just behind Ireland as favourites for the crown this year, despite the French completing the Grand Slam last year – the first team to do so since Wales in 2019.

Wales had a poor campaign in 2022 as reigning Six Nations champions. This has led to the Welsh bringing back Warren Gatland as head coach following the dismissal of Wayne Pivac in December. Gatland has won four Six Nations titles as Wales coach, including three Grand Slams in 2008, 2012 and 2019.

The 2023 edition kicks off on Saturday with Wales hosting Ireland at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, before England host Scotland at Twickenham for the Calcutta Cup.

The English have a new head coach, with former captain Steve Borthwick the man picked to take over the job from Eddie Jones, who won three Six Nations titles with England. They’ll look to have a strong Six Nations championship, with the Rugby World Cup on the horizon.

Here, we provide you with an in-depth data-led preview for each of the Six Nations teams ahead of the tournament start on Saturday.
