It took four seasons to do it, but Sunderland finally made their way back to the Championship in 2021-22. They followed the automatic promotions of Wigan Athletic and Rotherham United, with the latter coming back up to the Championship at the first time of asking following relegation in 2020-21.
At the foot of the table, the quartet of Gillingham, Doncaster Rovers, AFC Wimbledon and Crewe Alexandra all drop down to League Two for 2022-23 following their relegation.
