Anthony Gordon missed a glorious chance to get one over his former club as proceedings ultimately ended in stalemate at Goodison Park. Re-live an engrossing game with the key facts and Opta data in our Everton vs Newcastle stats page.

Anthony Gordon had a penalty saved against his former club Everton as Newcastle could only leave Goodison Park with a 0-0 draw on Saturday.

James Tarkowski wrestled Sandro Tonali to the ground in conceding the penalty, but Jordan Pickford bailed his captain out by saving Gordon’s somewhat feeble effort from the spot.

Newcastle generally dominated throughout the match but they didn’t manage to get another shot on target after Gordon’s 35th-minute spot-kick, as they lacked quality in the final third in the absence of Alexander Isak.

Had Gordon scored his penalty, it would have been his first ever goal against Everton, whom he left for Newcastle in 2023 after six years at the club.

Iliman Ndiaye caught the eye for the hosts, with his 11 dribble attempts the second most of any player in a single Premier League game this season, but Everton also generally flattered to deceive in the danger zone.

Idrissa Gueye and Dwight McNeil were both guilty of fluffing their lines when presented with good second-half opportunities.

Nevertheless, Everton will be content with a first Premier League clean sheet of the season.
