Jhon Durán came off the substitutes bench to score for Aston Villa for the fourth time in the Premier League this season already. We look at how this compares to others in the history of the competition.

Jhon Durán is making a name for himself as a supersub. The Aston Villa striker came on as a substitute and wrapped up a 3-1 home win over Wolverhampton Wanderers with an injury-time strike at Villa Park on Saturday. That was the fourth game that he’s come off the bench to score for Villa in the competition this season already, and we’re only five matchdays into 2024-25.

Overall, that means that Durán has scored eight of his nine Premier League goals as a substitute for Aston Villa since he made his debut in February 2023. That tally is still some way off being among the top-scoring substitutes in Premier League history, with Jermain Defoe still leading the way with 24 from the bench.

He does, however, stand a chance of breaking a seasonal record in 2024-25. With four sub goals already this season, he’s now halfway to replicating the feats of Adam Le Fondre in 2012-13, who scored eight goals as a substitute for Reading. That’s the Premier League record, with his tally two more than Christian Benteke in 2015-16 for Liverpool (6) and Defoe in 2001-02 for West Ham United.

Those three players share the Premier League seasonal record for the most matches scored in as a substitute, with six apiece in those aforementioned seasons. Aston Villa still have 33 matches left in 2024-25, and Durán will only need to score in two more matches as a sub to equal this tally.

The Colombian’s total of eight substitute goals for Aston Villa is close to the club record in the Premier League, too. That accolade is held by Julian Joachim (10), with Durán overtaking John Carew (6), Luke Moore (5), Marlon Harewood (5) and compatriot Juan Pablo Ángel (5) with his four sub strikes this season.

Jhon Durán Sub Goals

Goals against West Ham United, Leicester City, Everton and Wolves have come despite Durán being on the pitch for just 172 minutes (including added time) this season.

Overall, Durán has now scored nine Premier League goals across 719 minutes played in the competition, an average of one every 80 minutes; among players to have scored at least two goals in the competition, only Erling Haaland has averaged a better rate (1 goal every 79 minutes).

Of course, there’s every chance that the 20-year-old’s feats for Villa in 2024-25 so far mean that he’ll soon find a starting berth in Villa’s side, but for now Unai Emery seems more than happy to keep him on the bench as their game-changer late on in matches.
