Aston Villa earned a 2-1 win at West Ham on Saturday to take all three points in their opening game of the 2024-25 Premier League season.

Debutant Amadou Onana headed in a Youri Tielemans corner in just the fourth minute to give Villa the lead, before Lucas Paquetá equalised from the penalty spot after Matty Cash was judged to have fouled Tomás Soucek in the box.

However, Jhon Durán came off the bench to score the winner in the 79th minute when he slammed in Jacob Ramsey’s pass. It was Villa’s fourth Premier League goal in 2024 where both players involved were subs, more than any other side.

  • Amadou Onana’s header in the fourth minute was the joint earliest goal (from the start of a game) a player has scored on their Premier League debut for Aston Villa alongside Kevin Phillips’ strike against Bolton back in August 2005.
  • All four of Onana’s Premier League goals have been headers from corners, with his effort today making him the 27th different player to have scored on their Premier League debut for Aston Villa, the joint-most of any side (also Chelsea).
