Manchester City lifted the 2024 English Community Shield after winning a penalty shootout 7-6 versus rivals Manchester United at Wembley Stadium.
City were fortunate to take the game to penalties, with Bernardo Silva scoring a last-gasp equaliser to make it 1-1, before missing his side’s first penalty in the shootout. A save by Ederson from Jadon Sancho and Jonny Evans’ miss in the penalty shootout ensured that Pep Guardiola’s side begin the season with some silverware, however.
Alejandro Garnacho thought he had given United back-to-back Wembley victories with just nine minutes left to play following their FA Cup final success in the same stadium back in May, but City eventually prevailed.
Whilst Man City will obviously be pleased with another trophy, the Community Shield has cursed many previous teams. The team that won the Community Shield have gone on to win that season’s Premier League in just one of the last 13 campaigns (City themselves in 2018-19). Guardiola will hope to overcome those omens in 2024-25.
