Manchester City started their latest Premier League title defence with a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea. Erling Haaland scored his 91st competitive goal in what was his 100th appearance in a Man City shirt, before former Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic sealed the win with a fine strike from range six minutes from time.

  • Manchester City have won their opening Premier League game of the season in 13 of the last 14 seasons, with the other game a 1-0 loss to Spurs in 2021-22.
  • Chelsea have lost their first Premier League match of the season for a third time in the last eight seasons (W4 D1), as many times as they did in their first 25 seasons in the competition (W16 D6 L3).
  • Since drawing 0-0 with Arsenal in March, Manchester City have won 10 consecutive Premier League matches, scoring at least two goals in each victory. It is City’s seventh run of 10 or more consecutive wins in the competition, two more than any other side has managed.
  • Erling Haaland is the sixth player to score his side’s first Premier League goal of the season in three consecutive seasons (vs West Ham in 2022-23, Burnley in 2023-24 and Chelsea in 2024-25) and second for Man City, after David Silva (2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16).
  • Manchester City have won an away Premier League game without Rodri featuring for the first time since February 2022 against Norwich City – they had lost their previous four away games when the Spanish midfielder had been missing.
  • Man City boss Pep Guardiola has now beaten 72 of the 75 managers he has faced in the Premier League, with Enzo Maresca managing his first game in the competition today. The only three he has faced and not beaten are Aitor Karanka (D1), Steve Agnew (D1) and Ronald Koeman (D2 L1).
  • Bernardo Silva has assisted six goals in his last seven Premier League appearances for Manchester City – one more than he managed in his previous 53 games combined (5). His assist today was his 43rd in the competition, the joint most of any Portuguese player along with Nani.
  • Across the last three seasons, Erling Haaland has scored two more Premier League goals in August (13) than Chelsea have managed as a team (11), and four more than rivals Man Utd have scored (9).
  • Chelsea’s starting XI – which didn’t feature a single player over the age of 26 – had an average age of 23 years and 180 days, the second youngest by a team on MD 1 of a Premier League season, behind only Man City’s team in 2008-09 against Aston Villa (22 years, 360 days).
  • After playing on MD 1 in each of the last 11 seasons, Chelsea forward Raheem Sterling didn’t feature in his club’s first game of the Premier League season for the first time since 2012-13.
