Adam Armstrong’s strike sends Saints back to the Premier League with victory in the Championship play-off final at Wembley. Re-live the action with our Leeds vs Southampton stats page.

Southampton will return to the Premier League for the 2024-25 season after beating Leeds United 1-0 in the Championship play-off final at Wembley on Sunday.

Adam Armstrong’s first-half strike proved decisive in an otherwise tense and cagey encounter that Saints just about edged.

Both sides had been aiming to secure an immediate return to the top flight after suffering relegation in 2022-23 alongside Leicester City, who finished the regular Championship season as title winners.

Ipswich Town pipped Leeds and Southampton to the second automatic promotion spot, leaving them the tricky task of battling through the play-offs.

Saints prevailed in the end as Russell Martin got one over his former Norwich City boss Daniel Farke, with Leeds facing the prospect of a second season in the Championship.

  • Southampton ended their five-game losing run at Wembley in all competitions, picking up their first win at the ground since the 2010 Football League Trophy final v Carlisle United (4-1).
  • This was Southampton’s 30th win of the season in all competitions, only the fourth time they have reached 30+ in a single campaign as a Football League club, after 2009-10 (32), 2010-11 (32), and 2011-12 (30).
