Match Preview

Two-time world champions Germany face debutants Morocco in the penultimate match of the first round of fixtures at the 2023 Women’s World Cup. This being the first tournament with 32 teams involved has meant a fair few unevenly matched fixtures in the group stage, and this game has the potential to be one of the more one-sided affairs.

Germany are World Cup heavyweights, as one of seven teams to have qualified for all nine FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments, while only the USA (138) have scored more goals in the competition’s history than them (121). The USA are also the only other team to have won the competition more than once (USA four times, Germany twice).

Germany have won 19 and drawn four of their 24 group stage games in the competition, with their only loss coming way back in 1995.

Morocco are minnows by comparison, but they did do very well at their last major tournament, when they finished runners-up to South Africa at last year’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. They led that tournament for possession (60.2%), passing accuracy (79.5%) and shots (94), and had joint-most shots on target (33).

They may not be able to dominate possession in the same way against better opposition in the World Cup, but they have quality in their ranks and will hope they can spring a surprise

Germany vs Morocco Head-to-Head

These two sides have never met before, but Germany have a very good record against African teams. They have won their previous five games against teams from Africa at the Women’s World Cup, scoring a total of 22 goals (4.4 per game) without conceding a single goal.

In Alexandra Popp, Germany have one of the most dangerous forwards at the competition, and a genuine contender for the golden boot award. If Germany have things their way, this could be the kind of game for Popp to get a few goals and boost her chances.

Germany vs Morocco Prediction

Germany vs Morocco Prediction World Cup

The Opta supercomputer makes Germany huge favourites to win, with a 90.1% chance of success. Morocco, by comparison, are given just a 3.6% chance of victory.

Anything other than a Germany win would be a shock. There is a decent chance of a big victory for a side who will harbour hopes of going deep in the tournament.
