The USFL has designs on landing the best of FCS college football in uniform during its upcoming spring season.

FCS All-Americans abounded during the USFL college draft on Tuesday, including the Pittsburgh Maulers using the No. 2 overall selection on UIW quarterback Lindsey Scott Jr., then a fifth-round pick on Florida A&M edge Isaiah Land, with the Birmingham Stallions going with Illinois State linebacker Zeke Vandenburgh in the fifth round.

Scott received the 2022 Stats Perform Walter Payton Award as the FCS offensive player of the year, while Land (2021) and Vandenburgh (2022) are the two most-recent recipients of the Buck Buchanan Award, which honors the national defensive player of the year.

Many of the 80 selections in the 10-round draft have NFL aspirations and will face important decisions about the USFL season, which begins on April 15. The NFL draft is set for April 27-29.

“Blessed and honored to be in this position,” Scott said after his selection, “but I’m still working to reach my goals in the NFL.”

The Maulers picked the 24-year-old Scott after the Michigan Panthers used the first selection on Michigan State offensive tackle Jarrett Horst. In his only season at UIW, Scott set FCS single-season records with 60 touchdown passes and 71 total touchdowns, passing for 4,686 yards with a national-high 197.7 passer rating,

Scott was the second of eight straight offensive selections to open the USFL draft before the Maulers picked Lafayette defensive end Malik Hamm.

Land, who’s been invited to the NFL Combine next week, led the FCS with 19 sacks in 2021 before Vandenburgh did the same with 14 in 2022.
