The matchups between No. 1 and No. 2 have been infrequent in FCS college football history. Perhaps surprisingly, the No. 2 team has the upper hand.

Fittingly, the 2023 FCS championship game was a matchup of the No. 1 (South Dakota State) and 2 (Montana) ranked teams, but that’s been an uncommon scenario in the Division I subdivision.

Top-ranked SDSU’s 23-3 win in Frisco, Texas, marked just the eighth meeting of the top-ranked teams. Montana also lost twice as No. 1 in championship games during the 1990s, while South Dakota State won as No. 2 in the regular season of its 2022 national championship season.

Additionally, the Jackrabbits vs. Grizzlies matchup was the eighth between the No. 1 and 2 playoff seeds, with five of the games coinciding with the No. 1- and 2-ranked teams.

The FCS dates to 1978, when Division I college football split into two tiers.
