Men’s Singles

  • Both Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal’s next Grand Slam victory will be their 21st, which would overtake Roger Federer for the most all-time in Men’s tennis (currently all 20).
  • Only Björn Borg (89.2%) has a higher winning percentage in Grand Slam matches than Rafael Nadal (87.7%) and Novak Djokovic (87.5%) in the Open Era, among players with 100+ wins.
  • Novak Djokovic has the highest win percentage in the Open Era at the Australian Open among players with 20+ wins (91.1% – W82 L8).
  • Novak Djokovic’s next Grand Slam final will be his 32nd, overtaking Roger Federer for the most all-time in Men’s tennis (31).
  • Novak Djokovic has won nine Australian Open titles, the most of any male player in the history of the tournament.   • Novak Djokovic could become the first player in the Open Era to win four Men’s Single titles in a row at the Australian Open, and the second in male tennis history after Roy Emerson (five, between 1963 and 1967).
  • Novak Djokovic (eight) and Rafael Nadal (four) have won 12 of the last 14 Grand Slam tournaments, with Dominic Thiem at the US Open in 2020 and Daniil Medvedev at Flushing Meadows in 2021 the only exceptions in that run.
  • Novak Djokovic could become the third player in the Open Era to reach 10+ finals in a single Grand Slam tournament, after Rafael Nadal at the Roland Garros (13) and Roger Federer in Wimbledon (12) – he has gone on to win the Australian Open every time he has reached the semi-finals of the tournament.
  • Daniil Medvedev is looking to become the third Russian player in male Tennis history to win 2+ Grand Slam titles, after Yevgeny Kafelnikov (Roland Garros 1996 and Australian Open 1999) and Marat Safin (US Open 2000 and Australian Open 2005). The last player other than Federer, Nadal and Djokovic to secure back-to-back Majors titles was Andre Agassi (US Open 1999 and Australian Open 2000).
  • Daniil Medvedev won the 2021 US Open final in straight sets against Novak Djokovic: only three players have managed to win in three sets in more than one Grand Slam match against Djokovic: Roger Federer (Australian Open 2007, US Open 2007 and 2009), Rafael Nadal (Roland Garros 2007, 2008 and 2020) and Marat Safin (Australian Open 2005 and Wimbledon 2008).

  • Rafael Nadal has reached the quarter finals in 15 of his last 16 Grand Slam appearances, winning six of them (four French Opens and two US Opens) – the only exception in this span was at Wimbledon 2017 against Gilles Müller.
  • The last time an Australian player made it to the men’s singles final at the Australian Open was Lleyton Hewitt in 2005 (lost against Marat Safin), though the last Australian to win the title was Mark Edmondson in 1976 (against fellow Australian John Newcombe).
  • Alexander Zverev has reached the quarter finals at the Australian Open in the last two seasons (SF in 2020 and QF in 2021): he has never reached the quarter finals in a single Major in three consecutive years. Zverev was the only player with 100+ double faults in 2021 in Grand Slam tournaments (113).
  • Stefanos Tsitsipas has reached the semi-finals in four of his 17 appearances in a Grand Slam main draw, with two of those being at the Australian Open in 2019 and 2021.
  • Matteo Berrettini won more tie-breaks (11) than any other player in 2021 in Grand Slam tournaments. Berrettini could become the first Italian player in tennis history to reach the final in two different Majors, after having done so at Wimbledon last year.
  • Matteo Berrettini served more aces than any other player in Grand Slam tournaments in 2021: 311, 16.4 on average per match.
  • Hubert Hurkacz has only won one of his four main draw matches played at the Australian Open, against Dennis Novak in five sets in 2020 – he lost in four sets vs. Karlovic in 2019, in three sets vs. Millman in 2020 and in five sets vs. Mikael Ymer last year.
  • Only Alexander Zverev (six), Novak Djokovic and Casper Ruud (both five) won more Men’s Singles titles than Jannik Sinner in 2021 (four) – however, the Italian player has never reached the quarter finals in a Grand Slam tournament on hard courts in his career – his best result is a fourth round at the US Open 2021, where he lost to Zverev.
  • Andy Murray will take part in the Australian Open for the first time since 2019, when he lost in the first round against Roberto Bautista Agut in five sets – his last win in this tournament was back in 2017 against Sam Querrey in straight sets in the third round.
  • Feliciano Lopez will make his 80th appearance in a Major and become the second player in the Open Era with 80+ Grand Slam tournament appearances, after Roger Federer (81).

Women’s Singles

  • For the first time since 1997 neither of the Williams sisters will take part in the Australian Open main draw.
  • The last women’s singles final at the Australian Open between the same nationality was in 2017 between the Williams sisters.
  • Monica Seles in 1991 was the last player to secure the title at the Australian Open in her first main draw appearance in the tournament.
  • Since 2000, only three non-seeded players have reached the final at the Australian Open in women’s singles: Serena Williams in 2007, Justine Henin in 2010 and Garbine Muguruza in 2020.
  • The last player to reach the quarter finals at the Australian Open ranked outside of the top-100 in women’s singles was Shuai Zhang in 2016 (defeated by Johanna Konta).
  • Four of the last eight women’s singles title winners at the Australian Open have lifted the trophy after saving at least one match point during the tournament: Na Li in 2014 in round 3 vs. Lucie Safarova, Angelique Kerber in 2016 in round 1 vs. Misaki Doi, Caroline Wozniacki in 2018 vs. Jana Fett in round 2 and Naomi Osaka last season against Garbine Muguruza in the fourth round.
  • Naomi Osaka won the Australian Open last season: the last player to win back-to-back women’ssSingles titles in this tournament was Victoria Azarenka (2012 and 2013).

  • Naomi Osaka has a 85% win rate at the Australian Open (W22 L4): since 2000, only Jennifer Capriati (90%) and Serena Williams (89%) have had a higher win percentage in the main draw of this tournament.
  • Ashleigh Barty could become the first Australian player to win the women’s singles Australian Open since Chris O’Neil back in 1978, and the first to reach the final since Wendy Turnbull defeated Hana Mandliková in 1980.
  • Ashleigh Barty will be the top-seeded player at the Australian Open 2022: the last time the #1 seed failed to reach at least the fourth round was in 1979 (Virginia Ruzici eliminated in rd 1).
  • Aryna Sabalenka has reached the semi-finals in the last two Grand Slams tournaments, after never managing to reach the QF in her previous 14 Majors main draw appearances. Sabalenka has made 74 double faults (18.5 on average) in her last four matches played and lost the last three in a row (vs. Sakkari at the WTA Finals 2021, vs. Juvan in Adelaide 1 and vs. Peterson in Adelaide 2).
  • Anett Kontaveit had the most wins on hard courts in 2021, excluding ITF Tournament (39). She has only made one quarter final in a Grand Slam, back in 2020, in a defeat against Simona Halep.
  • Ons Jabeur won the joint-most matches in 2021, excluding ITF Tournaments (48, level with Anett Kontaveit). She made 147 successful dropshots in 2021 in the WTA Tour, more than any other player.
  • Garbine Muguruza could be the second Spaniard to reach the final at the Australian Open in two different editions of the tournament, after Arantxa Sánchez Vicario (1994 vs. Steffi Graf and 1995 vs. Mary Pierce), while she could become the first Spaniard to lift the women’s singles trophy in this tournament.
  • Iga Swiatek is yet to reach the quarter finals in a Grand Slam tournament not played on clay courts. Swiatek will be the #7 seeded player: in the previous seven seasons, the #7 seed has reached at least the QF on five occasions – the only exceptions in this run were Jelena Ostapenko in 2018 (round 3) and Aryna Sabalenka last season (round 4).
  • Emma Raducanu won the last Major tournament at the 2021 US Open: over the past six seasons, only Naomi Osaka has managed to win back-to-back Grand Slam titles (US Open 2018 and AO 2019 and US Open 2020 and AO 2021).
  • The Australian Open is the only Grand Slam tournament in which Barbora Krejcikova has never managed to reach the third round: in both of her previous main draw appearances, she has been eliminated in the second round by Ekaterina Alexandrova in straight sets.
  • Simona Halep has made it to the quarter finals in three of her last four appearances at the Australian Open, after being eliminated in the First Round in her two previous appearances in this tournament (vs. Shuai Zhang in 2016 and Shelby Rogers in 2017).
  • Victoria Azarenka has a 78% win rate at the Australian Open, her highest ratio in a single Grand Slam tournament. She is among the three current players with 2+ titles in this tournament (2012 and 2013), alongside Serena Williams (seven titles) and Naomi Osaka (two).
  • Elina Svitolina has lost her last four matches in a row (Indian Wells 2021 vs. Pegula, Tenerife 2021 vs. Osorio Serrano, Adelaide 1 2022 vs. Gasanova and Adelaide 2 2022 v. Keys): the last time she had such a losing streak was back in 2019 (Indian Wells vs. Andreescu, Miami vs. Yafan Wang, Madrid vs. Parmentier and Rome vs. Azarenka), and she has never lost five consecutive matches in her professional career.
